so, i think we can't forget why he was elected in the first place. he was elected in the first place because there wasn't any other candidate that was running that would care for the people of color that are in the jails better than ross could. and that still hasn't changed. those people are still in the jails and they still need the help of somebody like ross mirkarimi to try to give them a chance at redemption. and we hear that a lot, redemption. i'm a firm believer in redemption. i think for a minor incident for somebody to be taken permanently away is wrong no matter who it is. i defended three employees -- and this seems to be a pattern with the mayor -- at the hospital. you don't hear about these employees because they're not ross mirkarimi. they're not public workers. but they're reaching back into people's histories, people that have worked five, 10 years with no problem on the job, and trying to fire them now. so, this is not just a one-time thing. that's why to me this is a labor issue. because if they can get away with it with ross mirkari

i would like to recognize the department heads and elected officials. i know i've seen some of you here. thank you for coming out to support the fund workover our city employees. it is a privilege to me in particular to be here because i have had the opportunity for the last several years to be on the selection committee for the good government awards. it is really a treat. as a human-resources director, i get a lot of bad news. some of that gets in the newspaper. with all due respect to our brethren in the press, it's always a good story to write about bad behavior that may happen in a city department or that a public employee may have engaged in. we are the largest employer in san francisco. it is only natural as some of that bad behavior may fall on our doorsteps. it is refreshing to see some of the wonderful work people are doing, who really personify the ethos of san francisco. i want to celebrate that. on behalf of the mayor, thank you. please do your part to extend your appreciation to those people. it was a very difficult process. the community

well, it's hard to get excited sometimes about the presidential election here in california, where sort of feels like a foregone conclusion how the golden state is going to go. but this state is home to 11 house districts that are considered either competitive or close to competitive. and that's in the -- in the scheme of the democrats needing 25 seats if they're going to retake the house of representatives and perhaps reinstall nancy pelosi as speaker of the house. and some of those races are right here in northern california. you've got one of the very closest races in the state, actually, is where incumbent republican dan lundgren is being taken on for the second time but ami barra, the physician from elk grove. and the voter registration has changed in that district, due to redistricting and some very intensive voter registration drive on behalf of the democrats. they actually have a one percentage point lead in voter registration, which means that it is neck and neck, very close. there's been a lot of money dumped into this and other races by outside interests all over the country,
